A very proud people

"I heard and I am sorry. He was a great man after all," said a middle-aged Serb woman.

"It's sad that he died. Our enemies killed him. His heart could not stand it. They release criminals and they put Serbs on trial," said one old Serb man on a Belgrade street.

Whatever they thought of him -- and opinions were deeply divided--Milosevic marked his generation of Serbs indelibly and in the end he was one of them, a very proud people.

The tribunal that took him was an alien institution in a foreign land, in Serbian eyes set up deliberately to punish them for defending their national interests and defying the West.
